Shading and Values

The reason I chose to take a picture of the amplifier and microphone is because I think that music is the most extreme form of expression. The composition also shows many values and a unique angle.

I don’t think that my picture has very many similarities to Edgar Degas’ work. His work shows many more values and shadows in a unique way; whereas I feel that mine is somewhat flat and only shows a handful of values.

For the second part of the blog, I chose to critique Sierra’s drawing from last week. I think that she did a good job at creating values using cross hatching. Her contour line was also very smooth and the composition was pretty interesting. I liked how she made the simple bananas into a piece of art.

Chiaroscuro Crosshatching Drawing

For this drawing, I turned off all the lights in my dorm except for a small lamp that I pointed directly at the coffee cup so that extreme lights and darks would be expressed in the composition. I didn’t crosshatch the whole thing since the background is mostly black, and that wouldn’t allow the values in the cup to come through in the sketch. The outline of the cup in the sketch is mostly gestural, and I don’t feel that there is much space shown in the sketch.

Durer’s work is much more neat and tidy than mine. It seems like he plans every line makes. The crosshatching in his work is so tedious and neat, I can’t imaging sitting down and drawing perfect lines for hours.

For the second part of this blog, I decided to critique Kristen’s contour line drawing from last week. I think that her drawing had really good line quality, but the composition could be better. I think that it would have been more interesting if she had drawn the tape dispenser at an angle, like in the picture she took. I think that she had some pretty good contrast with some nice dark lines and light ones too. It doesn’t really show much space, but the shadow is a really nice addition.

Contour Line Drawing

I found this weird basket at my parents’ house and decided it would be a good contour line subject. I think the photo has better values and detail, of course, but I think the sketch has a nice simplicity to it. There’s not much depth or space in the sketch, but there also isn’t very much in the photo either.

My sketch is nothing like Honore Daumier’s work. His drawings are more detailed with fast flowing lines, while my sketch had little detail and few lines.

For the second part of the assignment, I looked at Jordan’s gesture line drawing. I really liked the values and shadows she put into the hand. Although I don’t think that there is much space put into the sketch, it’s an extremely successful drawing.

Gesture Line Expressive Work

When I think of someone or something being expressive, my thoughts first go to music. In my opinion, other than visual art, music is the most beautiful and complex way that a person can express themselves. Although the piano is just sitting in the union, I think that it is still expressive. We know the angelic melodies that can come from those keys, which I find extremely expressive.

The photograph and the sketch of the piano are at the same angle, but they are both very different. I attempted to sketch the piano very quickly, while still putting the detail of the keys into it. I feel that the photograph has more extreme values and seems much more elegant. The sketch gives a sense of depth and space because of the columns in the background as well as the outline of the carpet and tile.

I feel that in my sketch you can see the silent beauty of the piano, just as you can see the emotion and movement through Kathe Kollwitz’s artwork. While my lines aren’t as precise as Kolwitz’s, but they still express the piano’s beauty.
